“Stille Post” is based on the way a story changes depending on who hears it and how it is retold. The work consists of a series of different loudspeakers, each capable of recording sound, rotating 90 degrees, and playing back audio. Together, the speakers imitate the well known whisper game, known in German as Stille Post.
The first sound played through an old telephone is a recording of a woman's voice in a telephone conversation, sampled from the LP Die Maske des Mörders. The first loudspeaker records the sound, rotates 90 degrees towards the next speaker, and plays back what it has just heard. The next loudspeaker records this playback, turns towards the third speaker, and plays back what it has just recorded, and so on.
Each loudspeaker has been individually modified and possesses its own distinct character, aesthetic expression, and personality. These modifications also affect the sound, either through an added audio layer that underlines the speaker's visual identity or through physical, mechanical interventions.
Ambient sounds from the audience - such as coughing or conversation - captured during the recording process are passed along through the chain of loudspeakers, thereby becoming an integral part of the work.
